Snorkeling & Plant Walk half-day experience

£49.00

Come and join Liz (herbalist at The Honeybee Sanctuary) and Laura (Laura Moss Sustainability Education - environmental education professional and snorkeling guide), on a half-day experience of coastal nature immersion!

We are delighted to offer another date for this popular event, the last of 2025 before the waters start cooling down again!

Sunday 31st August , 2-5pm at Gullane Bents

We will lead a group of up to 10 people on plant walk followed by a unique snorkeling experience in the beautiful setting of Gullane Bents, on the East Coast of Scotland. Learn the basics of snorkeling and practise your skills while exploring the local marine life. Our focus will be on identifying seaweed species and teaching you how to forage them safely and responsibly.

Experience the beauty of the underwater ecosystem in a serene and educational setting. Perfect for nature enthusiasts and those interested in sustainable practices of coastal foraging.

EXPERIENCE OUTLINE:

We’ll begin by winding our way down to the beach through the dunes and bluffs at Gullane, taking our time to look and learn about the properties and purposes of some of the land-side edible and medicinal plants we find. This begins a stepping into the natural environment, a slowing down, and an opening of all the senses to the plants and natural world around us.

Once on the beach, we’ll take a moment to have a pre-snorkel discussion: tips, briefing, and an introduction to some of the seaweeds - and other wildlife - we might meet beneath the waves. Then you’ll get changed into wetsuits and snorkeling gear, ready for a guided snorkel with Laura.

We’ll be using one of the Scottish Wildlife Trust trails; whether you have never snorkeled before or enjoy regularly exploring the world beneath the waves, Laura will guide you and show you how to safely enjoy the water-side part of this experience!

Afterwards, warm up and share what we found; Liz will have a seaweed miso soup ready to warm you up, cups of herbal tea and a selection of tastes from the natural world around us. She’ll share the recipes so you can take your new knowledge forward and make them for yourself.

  • Places limited to 10 participants, minimum 4 people for the event to go ahead.

  • This session includes a safety briefing, the basics of snorkeling, and an overview of the marine life you can expect to see. Suitable for beginners.

  • Masks, snorkel and fins provided.

  • Please bring your own wetsuit, plus boots and gloves.

  • Suitable for ages 14 plus.

  • All participants should be able to swim 100 metres.

  • You will spend up to 1 hour in the water. In the event of adverse weather/conditions, we will aim to advise of any change to the session at least 24 hours in advance.

  • Please note the walk from the car park at Gullane down to the beach is steep in places, please contact Liz at liz@thehoneybeesanctaury.org for more information about accessibility and facilities.
