Medicinal plants : foraging walks (1:1 / 2:1 / small group)
Would you like to explore the seasonal medicinal plants growing here in East Lothian?
Learn how local herbs could support a specific health or wellbeing issue?
Or see the landscape around you in a whole new light?
We all had access to this knowledge and shared it in homes and communities until not very long ago. My intention with these foraging walks is to begin a healing through a process of (re)connection with this wisdom. It’s more than just knowing which herbs do what; take part in the creation of your own remedies, rituals, practices and medicine.
1.5 hour walk at Yellowcraig (near Dirleton) or The Law (North Berwick)
The price is per walk - so come on your own to focus on a specific interest, or with a friend and share the cost.
Reconnecting with nature is a form of activism: take control, make your own choices, heal yourself, heal nature. This is, after all, ‘the people’s medicine’.
You’ll learn about a range (typically 10 - 15) of plants, confidently identifying them and finding out what they can be used for;
You’ll taste the herbs - one of the best ways to connect with new herbs is by drinking it as a tea, so I bring the hot water and we make infusions as we go. This is a way to appreciate the energetics of the plant, gaining insight into what they might offer us;
You’ll gather some herbs to make a remedy or two ‘in the field’;
I’ll invite you to taste the plants we meet, and sample herbal medicines I’ve made;
I will follow up our walk with an PDF document containing information for reference. These notes and recipes are bespoke to the content of the walk which is guided by Mother Nature, so during the session we follow our instincts and intiuitions!
You don’t need any previous experience or knowledge, these walks are suitable for complete beginners and everything is explained.
Accessibility on the Herbal Walks: We will walk sections of the John Muir Way, which is not a surfaced path and may restrict wheeled access. Our route will include short detours into grassland, woodland or dunes. We will walk at a gentle pace, stopping often, and the total route is typically 1.5 - 2km. We can discuss the most appropriate route beforehand, please do email me: liz@thehoneybeesanctuary.org
Medicinal plants : herbalism workshop (1:1 / 2:1)
You’re promised a warm welcome in my home and herb garden, when you join me here at the Honeybee Sanctuary for 1:1 or 2:1 session in herbalism for natural health and wellbeing.
These 1.5 hour workshops are guided by the seasons and the herbs. Set in the relaxed, energising space of my apothecary kitchen and garden, we explore and make remedies to support healthy mind and body.
Come on over and delve into a particular interest, or come with a friend to learn and make together.
When we connect with herbs mindfully we can support self-healing and take positive steps to re-balance what is out of alignment in the emotional, mental and physical body. I use ‘herbs’ in the broadest sense, to include trees, seaweed and herbaceous perennials - benefitting from their healing properties and respectfully and sustainably make herbal preparations from them. Past 1:1 / small group workshops have explored:
Herbs for gut health,
Immune system & lymphatic system support,
Anti-inflammatory herbs to manage arthritis symptoms,
Alternatives to shop-bought cosmetics,
A herbal first-aid box,
Sea swimmers warming, nourishing, and circulatory support herbs.
I aim to create an inspiring setting, a relaxing atmosphere, and a gentle environment in which to share in practical herbalism with nature and the seasons as our guide.
You’ll typically take home 2 herbal remedies, learning the preparation techniques,
You’ll receive a follow up email with a PDF of notes and references discussed.
All materials and a herbal refreshment is included.
The Honeybee Sanctuary in walking distance of North Berwick train station.
The herbs we use are 100% organically grown, or ethically foraged locally.
